How to drive when fall rolls around

As fall approaches, the weather will be changing and the days will get shorter. Road conditions will also be impacted, and they will get more and more difficult as we head into winter. That may come as a surprise to certain drivers who really only consider winter roads to be dangerous. That’s a mistake as changing weather and dropping temperatures can also create difficult driving conditions.

So, as fall is upon us, remember that you must change your driving behavior to account for changing conditions.

Weather

Always remember that the weather will be fluctuating greatly in autumn. Although the temperature may go above 10 degrees in the afternoon, it may be near freezing in the morning when you leave for work. Therefore, make sure you are ready for icy roads even if you haven’t even seen a snowflake yet.

Leaves

Leaves are the trickiest part of autumn driving. The tend to cover the road, and often times they are wet and provide no grip for you tires, even if they are in perfect condition. So, if you see leaves on the road ahead of you, it’s best to slow down and assume that your vehicle has very little traction.

Sun

As a final note, remember that the sun in autumn is a little brighter than in summer, and it sets earlier. That means that driving home from work, it will probably be directly in your eyes. Always have a pair of sunglasses nearby to compensate.
