Mazda and Toyota announced this week their intention to jointly build a new production plant in the United States. The purpose of this plant which should be operational in 2021 will mainly be to develop and build electric and hybrid cars.
Mazda has no electrified model in its lineup at the moment while Toyota has several hybrid vehicles, but it still lacks an all-electric vehicle.
The two Japanese manufacturers announced an annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles for their new plant, but they do not have any details about where it will be built or what types of vehicles will be produced there.
Mazda and Toyota have been collaborating on various projects since 2010. In Canada, we have seen the fruit of this collaboration with the introduction of the last Mazda2, which was ultimately a Toyota Yaris. The 2 is however no longer on the market.
