According to AJAC, an eco-friendly car is “a vehicle which, for its size and purpose, provides the Canadian consumer with environmentally-friendly returns that compare favorably with other vehicles in its class.”

In other words, it is a model that stands out in its segment and with other vehicles of the same vocation or size for its efficiency and/or its fuel economy.

The 2017 Toyota Prius finished ahead of the the Chevrolet Malibu HEV as well as the Kia Optima HEV to claim the second annual Canadian Green Car of the Year award.

To qualify as a Canadian Green Car of the Year, a model must meet all eligibility criteria for the annual Canadian Car of the Year award which is handed out annually at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto. Subsequently, other criteria related to fuel economy and efficiency are added.

Eligible vehicles are then assessed by AJAC member journalists according to a series of criteria ranging from charging time and range (for electric vehicles) to fuel economy and other various available eco-friendly technologies.

The first annual Canadian Car of the Year award was awarded last year when the Chevrolet Volt won top honors.
