The price of gas is something that unfortunately we have no control over. So, we simply fill up the tank when it’s empty, occasionally glancing over at the price and more often than not finding it a bit too expensive.
On the other hand, there are plenty of tricks one can use to improve fuel economy and therefore be a little less dependent on the price of gas. By changing our behavior behind the wheel and how we drive, we are able to get more mileage out of every drop of fuel, and ultimately save money.
Here are a few tips to do just that. Thank you to Regency Lexus for their help with this article.
Check your tires and your engine
Your tires and your engine play a very important role in fuel consumption. Your tires are the only point of contact between you and the road, and if they are underinflated, that will increase resistance and ultimately slow you down. Your engine then has to work harder to get to the speed you want, and that will increase fuel usage. Also, if your engine is not in good shape mechanically, your fuel consumption will also increase.
Slow down and be linear
The key to saving fuel is not to drive too fast, but also to drive in a linear fashion. Do not slam on the brakes or accelerate forcefully. Instead, ease on the gas and slow down normally. Also, on the highway, there is a big difference between going 130 km/h and 110 km/h when it comes to fuel economy.
Remove unnecessary clutter
If you have objects you are not using in the trunk, take them out. Removing unnecessary weight will do wonders to improve fuel consumption. Also, try to remove any accessories from the roof or back of your vehicle that you are not using, like a roof box. They add weight but also increase drag which reduces fuel efficiency.
