Honda sort of surprised everyone today by unveiling the fifth generation of its popular compact SUV, the 2017 Honda CR-V. Scheduled to arrive this winter, the new CR-V has a refreshed and overall sharper design along with notable changes under the hood.
The modifications made to the 2017 Honda CR-V follow the pattern set by the new-generation Honda Civic when it was introduced last year. Like the compact sedan, for example, the new CR-V gets a turbocharged engine for the first time in its North American history.
Taken directly from the Civic, the turbocharged four-cylinder, 1.5-liter engine will be slightly more powerful with 190 horsepower. It will be paired to a continuously automatic variable transmission (CVT). The current base 2.4-liter four-cylinder will be the standard offering, as will a front-wheel drive layout. All-wheel drive will be optional.
Inside, the Honda CR-V promises to be more spacious with an extra 5 centimetres of leg room for rear passengers. That said, the most significant change for many will be the addition of a traditional knob to control the audio system’s sound instead of annoying touch controls.
Honda Sensing will be offered starting on the EX model, like the new Civic. The 2017 Honda CR-V should reach dealerships in December.
