Summer has arrived and with it has come the eventual summer vacation. For many, this means they leave home to drive hundreds or even thousands of kilometers behind the wheel of their vehicle. That said, even if we are protected by roadside assistance, or that we have a new model that in theory should be reliable, it is important to take some precautions before venturing too far away from home this summer.
“The last thing we want is for our vehicle to let us down in the middle of our vacation while we are in the United States or in another province. To avoid that, you need to make sure that everything is in order on your vehicle before leaving the house,” says a service adviser at Elite BMW.
Therefore, here are some specific elements to check and make sure they are in order before leaving the house.
Check your fluid
Make sure the fluid levels in your vehicle, especially brake fluid and coolant levels, are up to spec. You also want to check the level of your motor oil, and change it if it is too old as we will mention shortly. You will be driving a lot during your vacation, and it will be quite hot outside. Because of that, you need to make sure your engine will be stay cool and your mechanical components will be well lubricated.
Perform any scheduled maintenance
Ideally, you want to have your vehicle inspected and serviced before leaving. This means at the very least an oil change, topping off the liquids, replacing various filters, and making sure the main mechanical components are in good shape.
Fix the problems
If you find a problem during your inspecting, even if at first it doesn’t seem to be a huge issue, you need to have it repaired. You have to remember that when you are driving your vehicle for long periods of time in the blistering sun, you are imposing a lot more strain that usual on your vehicle. Therefore, you risk amplifying the problem. Also, it is wise to repair the cracks in your windshield and replace windshield wipers if need be. Also, replace your headlights if they are not working perfectly.
Check your tires
Make sure your tires are properly inflated, and that they are not too worn. You also want to make sure you have a spare tire.
