Odds are you’ve never spotted a Polestar on the road; they are a rare breed indeed. Of the 1,000 slated for production for the 2017 model year, only 125 are coming to Canada.
We’ve established that the S60 and V60 Polestar are special. Are you special enough for it? These cars are no-compromise performance machines and need to be accepted as such. First off, you cannot select any options when purchasing so if you don’t like something about it, tough luck. In fact, your options are Silver or Rebel Blue. That’s it.
Then, there’s the power. You cannot deny the 2.0-litre T6 twin-charged (that’s turbo- and supercharged) Drive-E 4-cylinder engine. Its 367 horsepower and 347 lb.-ft. of torque will not be ignored as they were bred to race. The 8-speed autobox was tuned for going fast as well and it will remind you as dealing with stop-sign and traffic-light burdened cityscapes are not its favourite activity.
Moving on, the 80% stiffer springs and Öhlins shock absorbers are designed for carving and banked on-ramps, not avoiding potholes. Truth be told, the suspension despises rough surfaces but will demonstrate an incredible amount of grip and poise everywhere else.
Bottom line, a V60 Polestar is a car that only an enthusiast can love. Are you that person? As a sign of good faith, it’ll throw in superb seats, a snug driving position and a huge boot if you’re the wagon type. Ideally, you’re the Rebel Blue V60 type.
