Every city in the world has cabs, but only Dubai offers a flying autonomous drone to get you around the city. Fully autonomous and without a driver, the vehicle will be available this summer and is built by Ehang. The latter specializes in video drones, and is looking to diversify their applications.
Described as a “Aerial Autonomous Vehicle”, the Ehang 184 can be ordered using an app on your mobile phone. Once inside, the passenger only has to enter his or her next destination and let the drone taxi do all the rest.
The flying vehicle has a top speed of 160 km/h, but early indications suggest that it will be limited to 100 km/h when flying over Dubai. Even an aerial autonomous vehicle cannot escape speed limits …
Eight propellers installed on four arms positioned at the corners of the drone propels the vehicle. The Ehang 184 will have a flight time of about 30 minutes, and landing strips will be pre-programmed into the AAV’s guidance system in case of emergency. There will also be an OnStar-like assistance system and several back-up emergency systems.
