Fiat’s adorable-looking hatchback has captured the attention of drivers and pedestrians alike. The rounded body structure and emphasized headlights provide a cuteness factor that cannot be ignored.

The interior promotes much of the same vibe and style, and those that enter the 2014 Fiat 500L will experience an odd world indeed.
A funky Fiat world
At first glance, one might expect the Cat in the Hat to pop his head out of the window and wink at you. The idea is not so far fetched either. Fiat’s cartoonish hatchback offers more than a hint of anime vibe. The big and oval headlights combined with the whisker-like metal bar that sits atop the narrow grille truly emphasize this notion. The 17-inch wheels also add to the overall rounded and cuteness factor of my 2014 Fiat 500L Lounge tester.
It doesn’t stop there either. The world is as odd inside as it is on the outside. Grant it, stepping into the 500L is not exactly the same thing as of falling down a rabbit hole, but a sense of wonder is still present.
It’s intriguing, especially when sitting behind the wheel. It’s hard not to admire the massive amount of light that pours into the vehicle. It almost feels like an aquarium, and this is mainly due to the large windows (which provide great visibility), and full sunroof.
The rounded styling of the interior keeps in line with the outward, cartoonish appearance. It is colorful and unique, from the steering wheel to the door handles. One thing we cannot take away from the 500L is that it looks and feels like nothing else on the road.
In terms of interior space, the 500L does well. In other words, more than one fish can swim around in here. From the front to the rear, both the driver and passengers should feel that their bubble of personal space remains intact. Cargo volume is not too shabby either, and the rear seats do fold with a 60/40 split to provide even more room. Fiat has done a great job with the look, vibe and spaciousness of the 2014 500L.
Things to consider
The illusion begins to break when you turn the key and press your foot against the gas pedal. It was less shocking this time around, since I had previously driven the 2014 Fiat 500L Sport last November. I still enjoy the style and the vibe of the car, but I was less enthusiastic about the driving experience.
As you start the car, the first element you’re likely to notice is the seat positioning. The 500L is bigger and longer than other Fiat 500 models, and the driver sits surprisingly high off the ground. In terms of visibility it’s great, but I found the overall driving position to be a little too commanding.
It is especially noticeable if you equip your vehicle with the 6-speed manual transmission. The seat only moves forward so much, and it only drops so low, so you constantly feel as if you are reaching for the clutch pedal or the gearbox. It’s an issue whether you’re 5’5” or 6 foot tall. You may also feel that the seats are less comfortable than they are pretty, mostly because the seat does not extend out far enough, and the materials used inside could also be of higher quality.
Under the hood
Once you’re more or less comfortably setup and the car is started, the weak acceleration will have you wondering what’s going on. The 2014 Fiat 500L is equipped with a 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo generating 160-horsepower – the same engine that powers the Fiat Abarth – but the extra weight hinders performance. Press down on the right pedal and not a lot happens.
On the other hand, if performance is not that big of an issue for you, as it will not be for most buyers attracted to the 500L, then know that the hatchback does move quite well, especially when driving in the city. It is agile and nimble in tight spots, making it a breeze to park. Handling is not to shabby either, and overall provides a dynamic driving experience. If only it had about 30 extra horsepower.
Trims and features
The 2014 Fiat 500L offers a variety of trims, options and features from which to choose from. The 5-door hatchback is available in four trim levels that range from Pop, Sport, Trekking and Lounge.
Each trim offers a different seating surface made of either cloth or leather, and those who like colorful colors will be well-served. And 16-inch wheels are standard on the Pop model, while the other versions will have 17-inch wheels. The black or white roof is also only available on the last three trims, as is the sunroof.
As for the safety features, all models will include electronic stability and traction control, along with Hill Start Assist. Technology features such as hands-free communication with Bluetooth streaming audio are standard, and satellite radio, Uconnect infotainment system, and navigation are available on the Sport, Trekking and Lounge.
Fuel economy
All models are said to offer a fuel economy rating as low as 8.0/6.0 litres per 100 kilometres (city/highway). My observed consumption over 223 km was 9.0 L/100km for the 500L Lounge, equipped with the manual transmission. That is certainly respectable, but it isn’t enough to distance the 500L from its competitors.
Conclusion
Overall, poor comfort and acceleration puts a damper on the initial excitement one may have with the 500L. The price tag too, with the added features and taxes, is quite hefty. If you have your eye on the 2014 Fiat 500L Lounge, know that it is a vehicle to appreciate for its funky styling, spaciousness, and great visibility, but make sure you have enough time behind the wheel before signing the sales contract.
