American manufacturer General Motors has announced a new recall this morning that concerns about 8.2 million vehicles.
A problem with the ignition switch is at the heart of the recall, the 48th announced by GM since the beginning of the year.
According to GM, the key may rotate out of the “on” position and move to the “accessory” position which will shut off the engine and deactivate power steering and braking functions, increasing the risk of a collision. In addition, the airbags may not inflate in the event of an accident, increasing the risk of injury.
In total, General Motors has recalled more than 29 million vehicles since the beginning of the year, a new record. There have been seven accidents and three deaths related to the faulty ignition switch defect ignition since the beginning of 2014, although a direct link between the mechanical problem and the accidents has yet to be conclusively established.
The recalled models are:
• Chevrolet Malibu, 1997-2005
• Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1998-2002
• Oldsmobile Alero, 1999-2004
• Pontiac Grand Am, 1999-2005
• Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 2000-2005
• Pontiac Grand Prix, 2004-2008
• Cadillac CTS, 2003-2014
