Apple Tackles Distracted Driving with IOS 11 “Do Not Disturb While Driving”

Apple’s attempt to combat the danger that presents itself while using your phone while driving has resulted in a new feature to be introduced in its IOS 11 operating system. The feature, entitled “Do Not Disturb While Driving”, has a host of features with the goal of preventing drivers from accessing their phones while driving.

Do Not Disturb

The feature does exactly what it sounds like. It blocks the driver from receiving any notifications while driving. By using a Bluetooth or WiFi Doppler it can estimate how fast you are traveling. Once enabled, notifications such as text messages and news updates will be blocked. At the same time the phone can send an automatic reply to any text messages informing the sender that the “Do Not Disturb While Driving” feature is enabled. However senders will be able to respond with an “urgent” reply in order for their message to be sent through regardless of the function being active.

However, passengers riding in the car will be able to disable this feature. Similarly cars that have incorporated Apple CarPlay will continue to be able to use that function the same as previously used. Some vehicles with this function include: GM, Fiat, BMW and Honda.

Another function of the new IOS 11 will be an updated maps application. The update will now allow drivers to see which lane to be in order to take the correct exit. As well as more detailed maps of airports and malls.

In brief, the “Do Not Disturb While Driving” feature consists of:

  • Blocking all notifications
  • Automatic text reply
  • Lock to prevent the usage of most apps while driving
  • Maps update to inform the user of the correct lane

All this will be available when IOS 11 is released in fall 2017.
