QUICK CAR REVIEW: 2017 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg Edition

A Wolfsburg edition Volkswagen signifies the end of the current model’s run. This is usually when Wolfsburg (VW HQ) packs the car with more value and equipment than at any time in the product’s life cycle. In other words, if you were thinking Jetta at one point, now would be the time to get on that.

The lowly Jetta is VW’s unsung hero in North America. It regularly hits the top 10 list of best selling cars in Canada because of the fact that this is VW’s entry-level car at $16,395. Despite this, it is often overlooked given the German giant’s spotty past and questionable decisions. Beyond this, however lies an impressive car that is equal or superior to Canada’s favorites.

Compared to the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic, the Jetta has a larger trunk, more torque (184 lb.-ft.) and similar fuel economy. Where styling is concerned, it’s a toss-up. There’s odd and not too pretty, boring and pedestrian, and simple and understated. Pick your poison.

Without taking anything away from the way the current Civic drives, the 6th generation Jetta has it beat in overall smoothness and refinement. The impression one gets from behind the wheel of the Jetta is that of driving an adult’s car. The responsive turbocharged 1.4-litre engine displays no lag while the steering’s comfortably precise.

The Volkswagen’s ride quality is nothing short of impressive and is mostly responsible for the grown-up feeling. The Jetta is a mature car yet can be fun to push thanks to a brilliant chassis and a very punchy engine, and willing transmission.

If you were thinking Civic, Corolla or Hyundai Elantra, take a Jetta for a spin. You might enjoy the experience, especially when you’ll realise that it’s the same price as the others.
