A few tips for driving safely in winter

Although winter has been upon us for a few months now, January, February and March are usually the harshest months of the season, not to mention the most difficult when it comes to driving conditions. That’s why a little refresher about safe driving habits in winter is never lost at this time of the year.

driving in winter tips and tricks

“There are a lot of things we can do in winter to make sure we arrive safely at our destination, but the keys are really to reduce our speed, keep a larger distance between us and other vehicles, and avoid making sudden manoeuvers”, says a sales representative at Camco Acura.

Here are a few tips that will ensure that you and your family are safe out on the roads for this final stretch of winter.

Slow down

We cannot stress enough the importance of slowing down when driving in winter. Even when it is not snowing, the roads can still be slippery, especially when it gets really cold outside. Moreover, not only is it important to slow down when taking a turn, but it is equally important to slow down when driving on the highway or a straight road. If you need to make a sudden direction change because of an animal or another vehicle, you can easily lose control even in a straight line if you are going too fast.

Keep a safe distance

Because the road is slippery in winter, you can expect your braking distances to increase dramatically. That means that it is a wise decision to keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you at all times. If the other car should happen to brake suddenly, you will have a better chance of avoiding it.

Aside from adapting your driving habits, it is also important to make sure your winter tires are still in good condition, and that they are properly inflated. You also want to ensure that your vehicle is still in good mechanical condition.
