Nobody wants to be in a car accident. But in general, in the career of all motorists, it will happen at least once. Because it happens so rarely, it is rare that the driver knows instinctively how to respond. There are however a few simple steps to help you through it in the simplest way possible.
After the accident, the first thing is to take a deep breath a look around you. Make sure first of all that you are not injured and that you are not in a dangerous position. Then, make sure the occupants of your vehicle or the other vehicle are ok.
If there are injuries, remain calm and contact 911 if you can. Unless you have the training or are in a situation where there is immediate danger, like a fire for example, do not try to help the injured on the scene. Your good intentions can cause more harm than good.
If no one is injured, be sure to move the vehicles involved as far away from traffic as possible, if possible. Then sit down with the other driver, and exchange required information. The accident report is the best tool, but if you do not have one, make sure you gather the following information:
The name and address of the driver;
The license number of the driver;
The name and address of the owner of the vehicle registered in the vehicle registration certificate;
The vehicle license plate number;
The information appearing in the insurance certificate.
When you have in hand all this information, call your insurer. Even if you are not at fault and even if the damage is minimal, it’s always best to notify your insurance company.
Above all, again, always remain calm.
