Two environmental groups have decided to sue the Canadian government, specifically Environment Minister Catherine McKenna, who has so far refused to sue Volkswagen for the diesel engine deal.
Two groups, the Environmental Defense (ED) and Canadian Physicians for the Environment (CAPE), argue that Canada has an obligation to prosecute Volkswagen under the Environmental Protection Act.
“Volkswagen deceived the public and endangered the health of Canadians. It is time for the Government of Canada to punish them with the full force of criminal law rather than give them a free pass,” says Ecojustice, which represents ED and CAPE.
Volkswagen was found guilty of installing a rigging device on some of its diesel-powered vehicles that allowed said vehicles to pass the EPA emissions tests even if its diesel engines polluted more than what was allowed by law. Approximately 105,000 Volkswagen TDI vehicles were affected in Canada.
