How to respond to a recall

There have been so many recalls in recent months and years, it’s very difficult to keep track of everything. To make matters worse, vehicle owners usually first hear about recalls on the news, but the information they receive is not complete. They don’t know for example if their specific vehicle is affected, they don’t know what to do next, and they don’t know how serious the problem is.

First and foremost, you should know that vehicle recalls generally do not affect a crucial mechanical component of your vehicle. Yes, there have been some very serious problems that led to recalls recently, but more often than not the problem is minor and doesn’t affect your safety. If the problem is severe, you will most likely be notified very quickly.

Most recalls in Canada are voluntary as opposed to imposed. Imposed recalls may be more serious and if that is the case, you will be told not to drive your vehicle until the problem is fixed.

So, the first step is to not panic and wait for the recall notice that should come in the next few weeks. If you have not received anything, you can always contact your dealership to find out more, of often times manufacturers set up a hotline that you can call to find out more information.

Once you do get the recall notice, make sure you take care of it as quickly as possible, even if the problem is not critical. You do not want recalls to go unattended for too long.
