The importance of monitoring the pressure of your tires

Many drivers underestimate the importance of their tires. That said, the tire is the only point of contact between the road and the car, and therefore it is essential to make sure that they are in good condition and more importantly, that they are adapted to how you plan to use your vehicle. This applies to both winter and summer tires.

tire pressure

“Having the right tires is only the first step. Once we have the right tires, we need to make sure they are properly inflated. Several motorists head down the road with tires that are underinflated or overinflated which in turn increases fuel consumption and tire wear while reducing comfort and agility,” says a service representative at Morrey Nissan of Coquitlam.

Indeed, an underinflated tire will be softer and therefore, the contact area between the tire and the road increases. This has the effect of increasing friction and in the end leads to greater fuel consumption. The tire also wears out a lot faster.

In return, an overinflated tire will have a reduced contact surface which has a detrimental effect on the car’s safety and agility. Furthermore, the wear will be uneven as it is the center of the tread that will be largely in contact with the road.

To know your tires’ proper pressure, consult the label located on the inside of the car door frame, or in the driver’s manual or in the glove compartment. Then use a good gauge to determine if the pressure is adequate.
