All-season tires: you have to watch out for fakes

The idea of a fake rolex or a fake profile picture is a lot more common than, say, a fake tire. That said, there are in Canada and the United States a market for fake all-season tires. Perhaps fake is a strong word, so let’s just describe these tires as being of lesser quality than you would expect, although in some cases they are plainly fake.

The problem was first picked up by Consumer Reports who, when testing all-season tires, noted horrible results with Chinese-made tires. The American official distributor of the tire contested the results and ended up proving that the tires that had been tested by Consumer Reports were copies. It won’t happen often, but it will happen.

“We’ve always told our clients not to bend on the quality of their tires. After all, your tires are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road, so you want to make sure they are high-quality”, says a parts and accessories representative at Mendes Toyota Scion.

“Therefore, we often recommend to our clients that they follow the tire recommendations made by the manufacturer in order to ensure that the tires that they ultimately put on their vehicle are perfectly suited to their car, truck or SUV”, adds the representative.

Ultimately, buyers should not worry about fake tires too much. If they buy from a reputable source like their dealership or an authorized tire dealer, the risk is minimal. However, do not hesitate to go back if you feel the tire is not performing up to par, and again, follow the recommendations of the people who built the car!
