Many of us need to tow something with our vehicles. It can be a camper, or a boat, or off-road vehicles. The point is that towing capacity is important for many buyers. That said, looking at how many pounds your vehicle can tow is just the beginning. Once you know your vehicle can tow a specific load, there are still important considerations.
Here are five keys to towing with your vehicle. Thank you to Mercedes-Benz Ottawa for their help with this article.
Know your weight
You need to know exactly how much you are towing. Moreover, make sure the vehicle you will be using to tow is capable of a few hundred pounds more than the weight you need to haul (at the very least)
Have the right vehicle
This is actually pretty straightforward. You need to know how much you can tow with your vehicle. Consult the automaker’s website to find out the maximum towing capacity, and make sure you have all the necessary equipment.
Give yourself some room
It is crucial that you remember when towing that your vehicle is much longer now. Therefore, there are places you may not be able to go, and roads you may not be able to take. Moreover, when turning, make sure you take a wide angle in order to avoid going over the curb or hitting an object on the side of the road. Ideally, before taking off, you may want to practice in a parking lot or on an empty road.
Give yourself some time
Your vehicle may be fast when there is nothing behind it, but adding a few thousand pounds will greatly slow it down. Therefore, when merging on the highway, passing or turning onto a busy street, make sure no one is coming up fast.
Be careful when backing up
Pretty straightforward as well. The idea is not to tell you something you already knew, but to enforce the fact that it is never a bad idea to practice.
